*Job Description:
Architects are professionals licensed and trained in designing buildings and structural designs that are safe, functional and suited for the individuals who occupy them. Architects also provide individuals, businesses and organizations with a detailed plan explaining various designs, selecting a site or what impact the structure will have on the environment.

After going over these procedures and agreeing on a proposal the Architect will start drawing up the plans for the lay out of the structure; plumbing, air condition, ventilation, electrical systems, etc. In designing these structures the Architect follows the building codes, fire regulations, zoning laws and other ordinances that may apply.
Architects design many different types of structures and buildings such as schools, offices, apartment buildings, factories, warehouses, etc. Some Architects may specialize in only one phase of work as in the design of one specific type of building such as schools and hospitals. Architects often work with engineers, interior designers and Landscape Architects who are working on the same project.

*Education/Training:
All States and the District of Columbia require individuals to have a Architecture license before they can provide Architectural services. A professional degree in Architecture is required to receive a license. A period of practical work training (usually 3 years) and passing the Architect Registration Examination. The majority of Architectural degrees are from 5-year Bachelor of Architecture programs for students with no prior Architectural training. Students with a professional undergraduate degree in Architecture a number of schools offer a 2-year master of Architecture program. A typical Architectural program includes Architect courses in Architecture building design, architectural structures, math, architectural theory, architectural technology, professional practice and liberal arts. To maintain an architect license most States require some type of continuing architect education, usually involving the completion of a certain number of credits annually, by attending an architecture conference, workshops, architectural classes or college classes.

*Job Outlook:
Architects jobs are projected to grow 9% to 17% through 2014. Strong growth is expected to come from commercial construction as the demand for space increases. As the population continues to grow and the baby-boomers begin to retire more healthcare facilities and nursing homes will be needed.

*Working Conditions:
Most Architects time is spent in offices drawing and developing designs for their clients. They will often visit the construction sites to keep check on the progress of projects. Most Architects work a typical 40 hour week, but occasionally work nights and weekends to meet a deadline.

*Estimated Average Annual Earnings:
$60,700. Those just starting their internships can expect to earn less. Architect wages will vary depending on location, area size, population, etc.
